Before selecting a care provider, take time to reflect on what you envision for your pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum care.
Consider:
- How do you want to feel throughout this journey?
- How do you want to be supported, physically, emotionally, and spiritually?
- Do the values and approach of your care provider align with yours?
Think about your preferences for prenatal care:
- Standard obstetrical care, or holistic guidance including nutrition and well-being?
- Interventions such as ultrasounds or routine blood work — are they meaningful for you or unnecessary?
- Where do you want to give birth: at home, in hospital, or unassisted?
- How do you wish to be supported during labor and birth?
- What kind of postpartum care feels right for you?
Your Role in Choosing
Remember: you are the interviewer. You have the right to ask questions, clarify expectations, and understand what your provider can and will do if something unexpected arises.
- Ask about their scope of practice and the type of support you can expect.
- Be clear about what you want — and don’t want — for yourself and those who will be present.
- Ensure your entire care team (partner, family, doula, midwife, or anyone else) is aligned with your vision.
